Houla horror: truth is elusive, lies are easier to spot
May 27th, 2012 by Syd Walker

Over the last 24-hours there’s been a renewed media storm over Syria – prompted by a horrific story of atrocities in the town of Houla. Very gruesome images of dead children have been offered to the media, which has lapped them up and used them again and again on our screens and in our newspapers.

The UN observers in Syria, so far, have declined to draw definite conclusions about who’s responsible for this terrible massacre. But unsurprisingly, western media has been less circumspect. There’s a deafening chorus of howls complaining ‘The World’ isn’t doing anything, while President Assad gets away with murdering his own people – again!

Kristyan Benedict tweets about the Houla massacre

Kristyan Benedict tweets about the Houla massacre; Amnesty UK's Campaigns Manager already knows who's guilty - and tells us all!

I’ve no doubt some of the Twitter users tweeting and re-tweeting this type of sentiment on the #Houla hashtag are genuine in their concern. Yet remarkably few people ever seem to pause and ask themselves the obvious question – why on earth would the Syrian Government want to kill Syrian children? And even if for some reason they did – why would they do so in a way more or less guaranteed to attract international condemnation and renewed calls for intervention?

In other words, ‘cui bono‘?

Who really benefits from this atrocity – and who doesn’t? Surely the insurgents and their foreign backers benefit.. and the Syrian Government most certainly does not! Given that recent bomb atrocities in Damascus have been blamed – almost universally – on extremist opponents of the Assad Government, isn’t it at least plausible they’re also behind this latest horror?

Yet just as mainstream media doesn’t want to give that line of inquiry much encouragement, major ‘human rights’ NGOs like Amnesty have also rushed to judgement. Their weekend tweeps have been hammering away, sneering at the Assad Government and spinning the incident as grounds for outside “intervention”… just like they did last year over Libya.

BBC Story 'Syria massacre in Houla condemned as outrage grows' - Version 1

BBC Story 'Syria massacre in Houla condemned as outrage grows' - Version 1

Every now again again the mass media is so dishonest it gets caught out. The BBC came a cropper only a few hours ago – but there’s been no acknowledgement and I suspect BBC staff would like their ‘mistake’ flushed rapidly down the Memory Hole.

To make it a tad harder for them, this post tells the story for posterity. The information on which it’s based comes from a pro-Syrian tweeter called Hey Joud, whom I’ve found to be well informed and savvy.

A few hours ago the BBC posted a story on its website (Middle East section) entitled Syria massacre in Houla condemned as outrage grows. The latest update is given as 04.40 GMT. It has some rather unremarkable graphics – a photo of a UN observer witnessing bodies in sheets and a map showing the location of Houla, near Homs.

However, a friend of Joud’s was smart enough to take a screenshot of an earlier version of this story. Then he/she did some homework – and discovered the dramatic image which it featured prominently was in fact a photo from Iraq dating from several years ago (according to the associated image data, May 2003). It’s featured as image no 52 on this webpage. The accompanying text makes it clear the bodies had been removed from a mass grave.

Hey Joud tweeted about this discovery. That’s how I became aware of it:

@BBCWorld propaganda: … showing a pic of bodies from Iraq claiming it’s the?#HoulaMassacre? ?#Syria?… …

By the time I went to check the same BBC’s story online for myself, the photo from Iraq was no longer there. At any rate, it doesn’t appear now on the equivalent BBC webpage, viewed from here in Australia.

BBC Story 'Syria massacre in Houla condemned as outrage grows' - Version 2

BBC Story 'Syria massacre in Houla condemned as outrage grows' - Version 2

I’d guess the most likely explanation is that the original (highly deceptive) photo was taken from BBC archives, used in this article for its high dramatic impact – then quickly replaced when the BBC became aware someone had spotted the deception. If that’s not what actually happened, perhaps the BBC would care to correct me?

This is not the first time I’ve reported on image fakery with regard to Syria. The western media’s sustained attack on that beleaguered nation has now been underway for more than a year. A comprehensive account of all its deceptions and misreporting over that period would fill many volumes.

No-one ever seems to be held accountable for the gross breaches of journalistic ethics that do come to light. Jobs in organisations like Reuters and the BBC must be relaxing. Unlike humble bloggers out here in the ‘real world’, these folk don’t need to bother about truth and accuracy. If they ever do get busted by a wary public, their butt is always well-protected.

George Orwell’s book 1984 is often viewed as a parody of totalitarian states such as Soviet Russia, even though the tale was actually set in England.

I think there’s another possibility. In the early 1940s, Orwell spent a year devising war propaganda for the BBC. Working at the Beeb was probably all the inspiration he needed to write the most famous dystopia of his century..

I love it how some people only care about Iraqi bodies when they are presented as “Syrian children murdered by an enemy of the US Department of State.”

Where was the outrage and calls for military intervention against a genocidal army nine years ago? Where is the mainstream media trying to convince us that it is just some collateral damage of a bigger conflict and that we should move on with our lives?

I salute SydWalker’s linguistics when he says “…the information on which it’s based comes from a pro-Syrian tweeter called….”. If Syd had said pro-government it would’ve been acceptable and more neutral. But pro-Syrian is more in touch with the pulse of Syrian real life.

I hope I’m clear on this: your concern here is deception in journalism. That’s very well taken. But as to the fact of children below 10 getting their heads bashed is not denied. That’s what should upset the world. Innocent darlings sacrificed on the altar of war all for satisfying war leaders’ greed for power and wealth. Enough with wars! Enough with revolutions! Orwell did indeed claim that his work writing propaganda material for the government during WWII (along with many other British writers, holed up in the Senate Building of the University of London which later became the inspiration for the Ministry of Truth building) gave him a grave mistrust of propaganda on all sides; he felt it had “a corrupting effect” on all who touched it. That experience is credited with giving him much of the idea for Nineteen Eighty-Four.

BBC News uses ‘Iraq photo to illustrate Syrian massacre’

Photographer Marco di Lauro said he nearly “fell off his chair” when he saw the image being used, and said he was “astonished” at the failure of the corporation to check their sources.
The picture, which was actually taken on March 27, 2003, shows a young Iraqi child jumping over dozens of white body bags containing skeletons found in a desert south of Baghdad.
It was posted on the BBC news website today under the heading “Syria massacre in Houla condemned as outrage grows”.
The caption states the photograph was provided by an activist and cannot be independently verified, but says it is “believed to show the bodies of children in Houla awaiting burial”.
A BBC spokesman said the image has now been taken down
BBC was not prepared to let go a photo they claim was unverified…why post at all? Who are these ‘activists’? SOHR

The story is in The Telegraph:

A spokesman for the BBC said: “We were aware of this image being widely circulated on the internet in the early hours of this morning following the most recent atrocities in Syria.

“We used it with a clear disclaimer saying it could not be independently verified.

In other words, the BBC uses any old thing that is ‘circulating’ on the intenet, as long as it’s good propaganda.

Remember there is no proof at this stage as to who perpetrated the massacre in Houla, but the US-backed terrorists are the obvious choice, I mean who are the child serial killers? Just yesterday we had news of yet another ‘NATO’ (Western press euphemism for the US) massacre of children in Afghanistan:

The residents of Tal – Dow and Al-Hula saying: ( Truth about massacre in village Al-Hula and others villages near Homs, Syria)
by Konstantyn Scheglikov on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at 5:21pm ·
It’s google translation i will ask better translation soon

Truth about massacre in village Al-Hula and others villages near Homs, Syria.
The residents of Tal – Dow and Al-Hula saying:

    The text below:

    Grandmother of the Al-Hula:
“We here took place the massacre, and we want to see Al Jazeera took off that there has actually happened, not what they passed by unknown people.
Block positions were attacked by police. All the soldiers were killed, then they attacked our villages, torched a hospital in Al-Hula.
Bandits killed our pharmacy next to the pharmacy for a fact that he has treated a wounded soldier.
Nobody but the army will not help us. In anticipation of the arrival of Kofi Annan, went escalation of violence, and increased the number of terrorist attacks. Our children can not go to school, we can not go to our fields, our gardens and on the job.
That was yesterday – it’s unbelievable cruelty. Thousands of militants from the Al – Rastan attacked the town, killed all the soldiers at checkpoints. Burned the city hospital.”

Fatima Mustafa, a resident of Tal – Dau, Syrian Turkmen:
“I worked on the field when I heard the gunfire from the north and east, I ran to the house, and saw his house burned. Near the house was a roadblock, there were good people. I dropped everything and fled to their relatives.”

As a resident of Tal – Dow:
“I want security and stability. Wish that the army continued to guard us. As long as I can remember, the army guarding us. Do they hurt us. I’ll always sit at home and open the door only to the soldiers that would give them a drink of water.”

Syed Abdul Wahab, a resident of Tal – Dau:
“The terrorists who want to come here ostensibly free to take power. We have always lived in peace. We can not leave the house. Twenty-six hours we were hiding in their homes because of the bandits.
Corr. Al-Jazeera shows clips of the alleged Tal – Dow and Al-Hula, as you look at it?
Syed Abdul Wahhab – Al-Jazeera – it’s a false channel, this whole world knows we do not believe what they say because they are seeing it with my own eyes.”

    Grandma to UN monitors:
” They say airstrikes have been!. Lies, lies, lies. Liars, all of them come from Ar-Rastan.”

    A local resident:
    ” I’m from Tal – Dow and Al-Hula.
Yesterday came armed bandits, they told us: “Either you are with us will kill the soldiers and policemen, or we will kill you.” They killed our wives and children, were all killed. They killed the soldiers and policemen. I wish, what would the army came and cleaned our village from bandits. I want us to live as before in the security and stability.”

    A local resident:
” I am a resident of Tal – Dow and Al-Hula. Armed groups attacked the checkpoints were all killed. They told us to go with them, or they will kill us. They burned our house and started filming the neighborhood and talking on phones, which took off that supposedly were strikes. They killed and burned soldiers.
We want to be rid of these gangs, we can no longer be tolerated.”

    A local woman:
” We are from the villages of Al-Gaunt, which is located next to the Al-Hul. Nine terrorists killed my relatives in the field. The bandits set fire to our houses and we fled into the Al Gore, but there were bandits who kill us, we have a martyr, who was burned alive.
Why, by what law did they die? Is this Islam? Is this justice? All this from Hammad from Qatar. Hamad( emir of Qatar) is you now satisfied?”

These are some eyewitness accounts of what happened – the inhabitants of Tal – Dow and Al-Hula, but they are enough to figure out who to blame for the tragedy of Al-Hula.

Anna News has spoken with residents of Talda and Alhula in the region of the Syrian city of Homs. These Syrian residents had witnessed the so-called “Hula massacre”. They say that the people had a good relationship with the Syrian soldiers; they even divide food and water with the Syrian soldiers.

The terrorists came from Ar-Rastan or Hama and asked the residents that they have to either kill Syrian soldiers with them or they will be killed.

(Such an action is not unique, this is also internationally known, for example, the Mexican drug cartel “Zetas”, which is led by ex-elite soldier, is known for similar actions)

The pharmacy in the village (it seems they mean the health station of the region, because it is later described as a hospital) was set on fire by the terrorists and was also devastated by the armed group. Just because Syrian soldiers were also treated there.

The residents of this Syrian region call the armed rebels “murder gangs”. These Syrian residents which were interviews by “Anna News” complained further, that these “murder gangs” have also written the cause of Islam on their flags.

These Syrian people are especially angry on the Arab news channel Al Jazeera, because al Jazeera lies – “from the beginning to the end”. A Syrian witness said the whole world would already know that Al Jazeera lies and now, they were able to witness these lies of Al Jazeera with their own eyes.

The Syrian residents, which were interviewed by “Anna News”, demand that the Syrian army uses more forces against the armed terrorists that everything will soon be so peaceful and secure like before.

When his appointment as new Foriegn Minister was announced a few weeks ago some heckler standing outside the NSW Parliament House accused Bob Carr of being a Zionist.

Now he announces the expulsion of Syrian diplomats together with a good dose of righteuos indignation etc.

Fair enough. But I wonder how angry Bob is about Israel’s slaughter of 1500 unarmed Palestinians a few years ago?

We may never know. At his press conference today, no journalist dared to ask him.

I think Carr’s performance on Syria is sad and pathetic – although this is very much a coordinated push by the ‘Friends of Israel’. Had Australia not joined in the story today in our newspapers would be why didn’t we, with our Zionist-dominated media again beating up attacks on the Gillard Government.

No – I’m not apologizing for Carr or the Government, but I can understand how hard it would be for them to resist the “tsunami of lies” (as a Syrian Government spokesman so accurately described the furore over Houla).

THE HOULA MASSACRE: Opposition Terrorists “Killed Families Loyal to the Government”
    Detailed Investigation

    by Marat Musin
    Global Research Editor’s Note

This incisive report by independent Russian journalist Marat Musin dispels the lies and fabrications of the Western media.

The report is based on a chronology of events as well as eyewitness accounts. Entire pro-government families in Houla were massacred. The terrorists were not pro-government shabbiha militia as conveyed, in chorus, by the mainstream media, they were in large part mercenaries and professional killers operating under the auspices of the self-proclaimed Free Syrian Army (FSA):

“When the rebels seized the lower checkpoint in the center of town and located next to the local police department, they began to sweep all the families loyal to the authorities in neighboring houses, including the elderly, women and children.

Several families of the Al-Sayed were killed, including 20 young children and the family of Abdul Razak. The people were killed with knives and shot at point blank range.

Then they presented the murdered [corpses] to the UN and the international community as victims of bombings by the Syrian army, something that was not verified by any marks on their bodies.”

We call on our readers to forward this report far and wide, post it on facebook. .

The massacre in Houla is being blamed on the Syrian government without a shred of evidence. The objective is not only to isolate Syria politically and economically, but to develop a pretext and a justification for waging an R2P humanitarian war on Syria.

The US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice has hinted that if the Security Council does not act, the US and its allies may consider “taking actions outside of the Annan plan and the authority of the [UN Security] Council.”

This report by Marat Musin confirms that crimes against humanity are being committed by terrorist militia.

It is essential to reverse the tide of war propaganda which uses civilian deaths as a pretext to wage war, when those killings of civilians were carried out not by government forces but by professional terrorists operating under the helm of the US-NATO sponsored Free Syrian Army.

This bunch is responsible for what happened in Houla.

As I have said many times before, these are Mercenaries who are paid, armed and trained by US and its gang of terrorist nations, in order to destabilize and weaken Syria. Can it get any more obvious? The Mercenary openly admits that enemies of Syria are sending him arms in order to attack the Syrian Security Forces and Syrian Government, he just openly admitted that he is a Mercenary working for Syria’s enemies.

“Might Makes Right” Says Conspirator of Syrian-Iranian Conquest
2005 interview profiles psychology of those behind the Houla Massacre.

“Both the Syrian and Lebanese regimes will be changed- whether they like it or not- whether it’s going to be a military coup or something else… and we are working on it. We know already exactly who’s going to be the replacements. We’re working on it with the Bush administration.”

“These guys who came to power, who rule by power, can only be removed by power. This is Machiavelli’s power game. That’s how it is. This is how geopolitics — the war games, power games — work. I know inside out how it works, because I come from a family of politicians for the last 60 years. Look, I have access to the top classified information from the CIA from all over the world. They call me, I advise them. I know exactly what’s going on. And this will happen.”

“This Bashar Al Assad-Emil Lahoud regime is going to go whether it’s true or not. When we went to Iraq whether there were weapons of mass destruction or not, the key is — we won. And Saddam is out! Whatever we want, will happen. Iran? We will not let Iran become a nuclear power. We’ll find a way, we’ll find an excuse- to get rid of Iran. And I don’t care what the excuse is. There is no room for rogue states in the world. Whether we lie about it, or invent something, or we don’t… I don’t care. The end justifies the means. What’s right? Might is right, might is right. That’s it. Might is right.”

“So Saddam wanted to prove to the whole world he was strong? Well, we’re stronger- he’s out! He’s finished. And Iran’s going to be finished and every single Arab regime that’s like this will be finished. Because there is no room for us capitalists and multinationalists in the world to operate with regimes like this. Its all about money. And power. And wealth… and democracy has to be spread around the world. Those who want to espouse globalization are going to make a lot of money, be happy, their families will be happy. And those who aren’t going to play this game are going to be crushed, whether they like it or not!”

West’s Syrian Narrative Based on “Guy in British Apartment”
Opposition propagandist in England apartment is, and has been, the sole source cited by the Western press.
    by Tony Cartalucci

June 4, 2012 – The “Syrian Observatory for Human Rights” has been cited by the Western media for over a year in nearly every report, regardless of which news agency, be it AFP, AP, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, BBC, or any of the largest Western newspapers. One would believe this to be a giant sprawling organization with hundreds of members working hard on the ground, documenting evidence in Syria with photographs and video, while coordinating with foreign press to transparently and objectively “observe” the “human rights” conditions in Syria, as well as demonstrate their methodologies. Surely that is the impression the Western media attempts to relay to its readers.

    from a citizen journalist:
‘I am a British citizen in Syria for two monthson my 4th visit to the country. I am here as a citizen journalist. I can tell you from first hand experience that the vast majority of people here support Assad. Its just the truth: plain and simple. It may not be something the West want’s to hear, but it IS the truth. Why do they support him? Well, because the West’s reporting of Assad is nothing like the man that governs Syria. He is not viewed as an evil dicator here. He is viewed as a strong leader who has kept the peace in a nation spilt by religious factions. Now the US and UK has stuck their nose into Syrian business, by arming one side, the Syrian view of Assad has been proved right. For it is the support by the West that has allowed the increase in bloody violence. If you want to find out more about my visits to Syria – check out my website.

There are a lot of soldiers of fortune among the bandits. They are Chechens, Romanians, French, Libyans, and Afghans. Moreover, there was a very funny accident with Afghan soldiers. A few Afghans were caught and asked, ‘What are you doing here?’ They replied, ‘We were told that we came to Israel, and at night we are shooting at Israeli buses. We are fighting with the enemy to liberate Palestine.’ It might be funny, but it is true. The guys were really surprised, ‘Are we in Syria? We thought we were in Israel!’
