“There’s no accountability for Israel on any issue… the (Israel) Lobby believes it can finesse any issue.”
Who said that? The head of the Klu Klux Klan? Osama Bin Laden?
No. They’re recent remarks by Professor John Mearsheimer, veteran of the US Council on Foreign Relations, in response to a question on the rationale for Israel maintaining its official position of ‘opacity’ (aka ‘nuclear ambiguity’).
Along with Stephen Walt, Mearsheimer co-authored The Israel Lobby – a significant essay that helped mainstream the issue of Zionist power in the contemporary western world.
There a transcript of Mearsheimer’s presentation here. It was part of a longer discussion – with questions – entitled Israel’s Nuclear Arsenal–Espionage, Opacity and Future. Other participants were longstanding anti-Zionist activist Jeffrey Blankfurt, Grant F. Smith of the Institute for Research Middle Eastern Policy and Sasha-Polakow Suransky, whose expose on nuclear collaboration between Israel and Apartheid South Africa was published recently.
The entire 2-hour session is available via the irmep website (look for Panel Discussion and Q&A Video Israel’s Nuclear Arsenal–Espionage, Opacity and Future, dated 7th July 2010).
