*All* war is both insane and criminal.

There is *always* an aggressor, and that aggressor is *always* criminal.

War is nothing more than armed robbery with actual, murdering violence – and all aggressors should be punished, terminally. ‘Normally,’ I do not ‘go’ for capital punishment, but for war, it should be *mandatory*, and not ‘just’ for the so-called ‘leaders;’ *every* aggressive attacker should be killed – and that *extremely* slowly, *exquisitely* painfully.

Start with the filthy, alien Zionist invaders, then the US murdering-to-thieve marauders. It started before my time with Hitler; *nothing* changed except the perpetrators; the world is not a single, tiny smidgin better off since WW2. If possible worse in fact; the US and Israel lie all the time; say one thing – do the (criminal!) opposite. At least Hitler was honest about his depredations.

I think you’re right to point to the corrosive effects of war on the psyche.

After Israel’s 60+ years of war, hatred and paranoia, it’s a wonder anyone sane is left.

Still, the most recent announcements about Israeli soldiers’ atrocities, as far as I can tell, are about war crimes systematically encouraged from the top – not individual acts of insanity.

Maybe Wilfried Owen loosing himself and going crazy shows the same mechanism as the Israeli soldiers going crazy in Gaza.
I mean, even for racists it´s beyond stupid to kill women and children and then bragging about it on t-shirts, like in that famous one “one shot, two kills”. Israel is dependent on American and German support and there they are showing the whole world the finger. We don´t care about any ethics or ordinary “rules of engagement” in war.
