Afghanistan: Leaks and Lies
April 4th, 2009 by Syd Walker
Afghani Insurgents

A Taliban Fancy Dress Party: no respect for western 'values'

There’s a document on Wikileaks about the Afghani insurgency called HB 9 Paramilitary Terrorist Insurgent Groups, dated 1st March 2009. See it here or via this page.

It purports to be a leaked US ‘Intelligence’ document, prepared by FOUOUS Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) G-2TRADOC Intelligence Support Activity (TRISA) in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The name of the alleged source has the ring of authenticity. It’s exactly the type of ridiculous, long-winded, acronymn-laded title the US Army would invent for itself.

Mangal Bagh

Mangal Bagh: in Afghanistan, even hippies are warlords

It’s hard for me to know what to make of the document from this distance, so I’ll just venture a couple of comments.

First, if it’s an authentic document, it suggests that the Americans and their dwindling allies have Vietnam Two on their hands. By November 2008, it says, the area under full control of the Western-backed Karzai Government had shrunk to a few small enclaves. Insurgents hold sway throughout most of Afghanistan.

Al Qaida

Osama: wanted for reducing THREE NYC skyscrapers to dust and molten steel. Did he use evil thought waves?

Second, if it’s an authentic document, it reveals a childish naiveté which helps explain how a once-mighty nation has come so close to being the laughing stock of the world.

It’s more like a teenage scrapbook than an official ‘Intelligence’ document. I guess it might work as a motivational Powerpoint Presentation for rookies. Images of the ‘enemy’ are dreadfully scary (more accurately, several discrete but interlocking groups of enemies are discussed).

If forced to choose now between true or false, I’d opt for the document being bogus – probably leaked by ‘Intelligence’ operatives. If it’s genuine, heaven help official American intelligence – and heaven help us, the world’s people, over whom these folk have such inordinate power.

Leaks are all very well. But the art of anonymous leaking as deliberate disinformation is highly evolved.

Ultimately, there’s no substitute for Open Government, Free Speech, Freedom of Information and Honest Debate.

While you’re visiting Global Research, don’t miss the the findings of scientists reporting in The Open Chemical Physics Journal.

Tom Burghardt Global Research appears to accept the TRADOC document as authentic. http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=12943

If anything, recalling the characteristics of insurgencies such as the one the US failed to quell in Vietnam, one would think the estimate of forces arrayed against US/NATO is under-reported – nor is it certan that Afghanistan government forces can be relied upon.

More sinister and historically familiar motives on the part of the US from the benefits of an ongoing conflagration in the region are examined in the above article:

“An unspoken subtext to the Times and Journal reportage is the continued utilization of these terrorist networks–by the CIA and U.S. Special Operations Command–for covert war against Iran–even as the Obama administration seeks Tehran’s assistance in battling the Taliban and al-Qaeda. As investigative journalist Seymour Hersh reported last July in The New Yorker the Pentagon funded the narcotrafficker Baluchi-based Jundullah organization to attack security personnel inside Iran.

While an open secret in Washington, Obama’s new product roll-out in the form of an ill-conceived plan to “disrupt, dismantle and defeat” al-Qaeda and the Taliban has everything to do with the construction of the $7.6 billion dollar “Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline that would cross western Afghanistan east of Herat and advance south through Taliban-controlled territory towards Pakistani Balochistan province,” according to Asia Times.”

While Obama smokescreens in Strasbourg with platitudes about denuclearising and reducing climate change, (speech here http://enduringamerica.com/2009/04/04/nato-summit-day-2/), the great game for oil and other treasure is on indefinitely. War is one of the most polluting of all disgraceful human activities – and even more ironical when the subtext of the current US operation is to control yet more greenhouse gas producing hydrocarbon resources.
