I’m not aware of ‘Firestorm’ and will try to chase it up. Does it explain who started the mass bombing of civilians and discuss Churchill’s motivations for targeting densley-populated civilian areas over a period of five years?

I did consider,when I first wrote the headline, that it might be an over-statement of the case.

“History you May Very Occasionally See on the History Channel, Drowned Out by a Seemingly Endless Succession of Pro-Allied Puff Pieces” might be a more accurate title for the article.

I was long puzzled by the absence of a heavy four engine bombers in the Luftwaffe, apart from the Condor which was mainly used to attack shipping. The Luftwaffe’s primary bomber was the Heinkell 111, a two engine bomber with a relatively small bomb payload.
The RAF, on the other hand, had the awesome Lancaster, as well as Halifax and Stirling four engine bombers, all capable of carrying tons of bombs, along with two engine bombers like the Wellington. Clearly the RAF was committed to massive aerial bombardment from the air, while the Luftwaffe fielded much smaller precision bombers, and even dive bombers aimed specifically at military targets.
History as we’ve been taught it is largely nonsense of course. As you say, Churchill initiated civilian bombing, in order to tempt Germany away from it’s airfields and towards it’s cities.
The British love of carpet bombing civilians reach it’s Zenith in Dresden, and for the Americans, who also loved their four engine heavy bombers, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Interesting that we weren’t taught that at school – I have only read about it in the last year . How much else has been left out????
