Getting Dennis Ross a Job
Jan 28th, 2009 by Syd Walker

As of this minute, I’m not aware of any official announcement that pro-Israel extremist Dennis Ross has been appointed by the Obama Administration to any post whatsoever.

Netanyahu and Dennis Ross

Netanyahu and Dennis Ross: why doesn't Bibi give him a job?

Yet the casual reader might think the exact opposite.  For weeks now, elements in the Zionist mass media have been pushing Dennis Ross with articles that make it sound he’s a shoe-in for a top job under Obama. Israeli political leaders seem to be counting on it.

It’s called ‘creating momentum’, I think. But does it work? Not when it came to foisting Ross on Obama as Special Envoy to the Middle East. Although Dennis Ross was widely mentioned as the likely appointment, to the relief of millions George Mitchell got the job.

Now there’s a rather blatant attempt to bump Ross into the role of  ‘Special Envoy to Iran’.

There could be no surer way of signalling to the Iranians that the USA intends to continue to pursue deeply misguided, provocative and utterly one-sided policies towards this populous and essentially peaceful nation than by appointing Mr Ross to that post.

It would be a shame if Obama can’t withstand the pressure. Yet the Israel Lobby is clearly pushing him hard – making the appointmesnt of Ross a cause celebre.

Dr Strangelove rides the bomb

Dr Strangelove's last ride: the madman played by Peter Sellers who loved the bomb

So here’s a helpful suggestion.

If Ross is given any kind of official role relating to Iran, his job description must specify he’s strapped to the first American or Israeli missile pointed at Iran, in the manner of Dr Strangelove.

I would hate any innocent Iranians to suffer, but perhaps this is the only way to get rid of him for good?

POSTSCRIPT

The following extract is from an article by Dennis Ross that appeared in Newsweek in late November 2008, entitled: Iran: Talk Tough With Tehran.

It could be regarded as Dennis Ross’ formal job application to the Obama Administration, accompanying his well-known cv.

See how many falsehoods and non sequitors you can spot. I tried to get most of them:

Everywhere you look in the Middle East today, Iran is threatening U.S. interests and the political order. (FALSEHOOD) One Arab ambassador told me recently that the Iranians are reminding Arab leaders that America didn’t help Fuad Siniora, the prime minister of Lebanon, or Mikheil Saakashvili, the president of Georgia, when they got into trouble—that in fact Washington left them high and dry. Iran, by contrast, is close by and not going anywhere. (TRUE) If the Iranians are throwing their weight around now (FALSEHOOD), imagine what will happen if they go nuclear. (HUH?)

It’s not too late to stop Iran from getting the bomb. (FALSE ASSUMPTION) Tehran clearly wants nukes for both defensive and offensive purposes. (NON SEQUITOR)

But it’s not clear the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would sacrifice anything to get nuclear weapons. (???) In fact, history shows that his government responds to outside pressure, (LIVING ORGANISMS DO RESPOND TO EXTERNAL PRESSURE – SO WHAT?) restricting its actions when it feels threatened (MOST PEOPLE DO TREAT LUNATICS WITH CAUTION!) and taking advantage when it judges it can. (UNLIKE ISRAEL?!!!_)

UPDATE: Will Obama Stack His Middle East Team with Neoconservative Ideologues? by  John Tirman was published in AlterNet on January 27th 2009.

It’s all worth reading. Here’s an extract:

Particularly upsetting to growing numbers of policy analysts, former diplomats and liberal activists are the widespread rumors of who would take on the ultrasensitive posts managing affairs in the Middle East, the Persian Gulf and South Asia.

According to these reports, Dennis Ross would become a special envoy whose portfolio includes Iran, and possibly the entire region; Richard Holbrooke would take the special envoy slot for Afghanistan, Pakistan and India; and Richard Haass would take on the Israeli-Palestinian issue.

Just after the inauguration, Holbrooke was announced for his rumored slot, and former Sen. George Mitchell, D-Maine, was given the job of addressing the Israeli-Palestinian imbroglio. By the end of the inauguration week, there was no official word on Ross. Holbrooke, Ross and Mitchell have been affiliated with groups that are overtly hostile to Iran, and it is that record of belligerence that has many who hope for a change of course wary.

Since 2001, Ross, the tirelessly unsuccessful Mideast negotiator under George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, has been employed by the Israeli-backed Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the policy arm of American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a key component of the Israel lobby in the United States. (WINEP was founded by Martin Indyk, another Clinton-era diplomat who may play a role in the Obama government.) Holbrooke, former U.N. envoy under Clinton, headed an ad hoc group called United Against a Nuclear Iran, which advocates military action against Iran if U.S.-defined terms are not met; Ross belongs to that group, and to a so-called Bipartisan Policy Center, which similarly advocates an extremely militant stance toward Iran. (Mitchell is one of four co-chairs of the latter group.) All of these organizations are populated by neocons and reflect what could charitably be called a “Cheney-plus” strategic vision.

(Now, as it happens, the rumors about Ross in particular may not come to pass. It seems that the main source of this rumor was WINEP itself, publicizing a “memo” to its board extolling Ross’ pending appointment as an über envoy. This, picked up by uncritical bloggers and repeated in the mainstream press, has now become the conventional wisdom. But reliable sources high in the transition apparatus insisted just before the inauguration that Ross had not been chosen as a special envoy. The ploy, if that’s what it is, recalls the “we make the reality” bravura of Bush/Cheney operatives.)

The ‘Subscriber Only’ War on Terror
Jan 28th, 2009 by Syd Walker

Ever since I wrote More Bin Laden Bull – a short article about an audio tape allegedly released by ‘Al Qaida’ in mid-January – I’ve been scanning the web, from time to time, to read what Bin Laden purportedly said.

Bin Laden Video Game

Bin Laden Video Game: a bloodless way to kill him, any time you like

I’d tried to find a transcript when the report of his statement first surfaced. But it didn’t seem to be available. I could find only edited highlights explaining that Bin Laden wants global Jihad and is very cross about Gaza. In the end, I decided to go ahead and publish my story, expecting to append the transcript of Bin Laden’s new statement later on.

I didn’t anticipate it would be so hard to locate a transcript nearly two weeks later…

When Bin Laden’s latest sinister message was announced, Gordon Johndroe, a spokesperson for the outgoing Bush Administration,  said: “…this tape demonstrates his isolation and continued attempts to remain relevant at a time when al Qaeda’s ideology, mission, and agenda are being questioned and challenged throughout the world.” Mr Johndroe reportedly added that “it also looked like a fund-raising effort.” [my emphasis]

Bin Laden

Bin Laden: is he "technically alive"?

That really piqued my interest. It made me even more keen to see the exact transcript. I’ve been curious for some time which bank Mr Bin Laden uses in this era of financial uncertainty. I’ve long wondered about his postal address, whether he uses PayPal – and if jihadis can send him contributions c/o Father Christmas at the North Pole?

Yet the world as a whole remains ignorant of these details. Bin Laden’s Appeal must be a big flop as a fund-raiser. In this case, he can’t even blame the BBC!

Today came a minor breakthrough. I found the website of ‘SITE Intelligence Group’. It seems to be a private initiative to help out a terrified world in these terrifying times.

There, at long last, I found what I was looking for: Bin Laden Calls for Support to Gaza, Jihad – both video and transcript. What a boon!

SITE Intelligence Group

SITE Intelligence Group: works to keep us all terrified, wants more subscribers

Unfortunately, SITE informs readers “The video and transcript are provided to our Monitoring Service subscribers.”

How annoying! I refuse to subscribe to online information sites on principle. Why doesn’t it carry advertising instead? (After all, the Military Industrial Complex isn’t exactly broke!)

I’m beginning to wonder: is the War on Terror now ‘subscriber only’?

A ‘conspiracy theorist’ might suspect SITE is an Al Qaida front. I make no such allegation – but was curious to learn who works for SITE. Naturally, I turned to the ever-reliable Wikipedia. It’s entry for the SITE Institute says:

The Search for International Terrorist Entities (SITE) Intelligence Group was an organization that tracked the online activity of terrorist organizations. The SITE Institute was founded in 2002 by Rita Katz and Josh Devon, who had left the Investigative Project (a private Islamist-terrorist tracking group). In early 2008 it ceased its operations, and some its staff formed the SITE Intelligence Group, a for-profit entity, to continue some of its activities.

Rita Katz

Rita Katz: battles terror every day, sometimes 'undercover'

Rita Katz? The name rang a bell…

Then I remembered an item I’d just noticed on What Really Happened: How does a Jewish chick named Rita Katz end up translating and releasing Al Qaeda’s ‘messages’ to the US media?

Personally, I have no idea how Rita forged her interesting career, but perhaps Adam Yehiye Gadahn helps her out a little, by providing good quality English-language transcripts? After all, according to Wikipedia, this high-ranking Al Q’aeda operative “is an American-born English-speaking senior operative, cultural interpreter, spokesman and media advisor for the Islamist terrorist group Al-Qaeda.”

Adam Gadahn

Adam Gadahn, Al Qaeda operative: bad boy from a nice family

Both Adam and Rita are of Jewish descent. Surely they can communicate without too much difficulty? Even though a vast ideological chasm must separate them now, they do share a lot of heritage. Who knows, they could have had the same rabbi years ago – before Adam’s shocking conversion to Radical Islamic Jihadism thrust them onto opposite sides in the Great 21st Century Terror Wars?

Rita is no mere armchair anti-terrorist. GreaterTalent.com explains:

“On numerous occasions, Katz has gone undercover to events organized by various terrorist front groups to collect information crucial to her efforts to understand and document the activities of radical Islamist activists in the U.S. She also trains and deploys others as part of her own undercover network.”

The story of Rita and Adam would make a great movie. If only there was a love-angle too, Hollywood might be interested :-)

Barak Obama still plays along with the Bin Laden game. This is what President Obama told Catie Couric last week:

Couric: How important do you think it is, Mr. President-elect, to apprehend Osama bin Laden?

Mr. Obama: I think that we have to so weaken his infrastructure that, whether he is technically alive or not, he is so pinned down that he cannot function. My preference obviously would be to capture or kill him. But if we have so tightened the noose that he’s in a cave somewhere and can’t even communicate with his operatives, then we will meet our goal of protecting America.

I’m still working out this blog’s next Opinion Poll, which will start on February 1st on conclusion of the current poll. Perhaps I’ll ask visitors if they think Bin Laden is more likely to be ‘Technically alive’ or ‘Virtually dead’?

Incidentally, if anyone turns up a free transcript of the latest output from Mr Bin Laden, feel free to tell the rest of us by commenting here. If it turns out Usama was silly enough to mention the address of his cavernous current address, I reserve the right to inform the FBI and may claim a share in the $25 million reward when they nab him at the entrance, milking a goat.
